I was afraid we were going to be boring and not do anything for our wedding anniversary but as luck would have it, we managed to get a few days off work so we decided to do the Great Ocean Road. It felt like a mini honeymoon break, reminiscent of the time when we drove down Highway 1 in California. Gosh, that felt like a lifetime ago.
We flew into Avalon and stayed in Geelong for a night. Such a pretty lil beach town which I obviously wasn’t aware of. I didn’t know it was a beach town. All these years and I’ve always thought Geelong was inland with lush countryside and farm animals!
The Great Ocean Road extends to Port Fairy and you can even drive on to South Australia but we only drove up to Port Campbell this trip. Our drive was all done in one day.
There were surfers getting into the water bright and early and backpackers waking up in their combis and families bringing their kids and dogs out for a swim in the ocean. And at every turn, another amazing ocean view greeted us.
We stayed a night in Port Campbell before driving back to Melbourne the next day. Here are some of the sights at the places we stopped at. Enjoy and I hope it helps you if you’re planning the same trip!
Torquay

Urquharts Bluff

Split Point Lighthouse

Teddy’s Lookout

Apollo Bay

For lunch, we found a nice place called Chris’ Beacon Point up in the mountains looking out towards the ocean. We had a three course lunch while trying to see if we can find the resident koala in the trees but alas, he was in a hiding mood that day.

Castle Cove Lookout

12 Apostles

The highlight of our trip was a helicopter ride at the 12 Apostles. Hey, it was our anniversary after all so what better way to treat ourselves. Oh my goodness me, it was awesomely spectacular. I have to say, the roar of the rotors, the bird’s eye view of the coastline and flying over cows and sheep was an amazing experience!
